.I often choose the female figure as a
vehicle for the portrayal of emotion and intimacy. I try to
render these figures as sylph-like forms which float over
voluptuous dreamlike landscapes evoking a sense of quiet
tranquillity and meditation. By painting these figures in a
simplified manner, I endeavour to elevate the work above the
constraints of figurative work containing recognizable
figures and try to use these forms solely to depict distinct
emotional states. Many of my female figures have a subtle Pacific character, with rich earth tones and simplified renderings of cabbage trees, palm trees, mountains and seascapes all figuring to make the worlds of my subjects come to life and to provide them with a natural world to interact with. Other figures have an indefinable European character, inspired by my love of the Spanish language, particularly Spanish poetry by Pablo Neruda.

Each piece has its own quiet space where thought is free, and we are all the same, but with a uniqueness of our own that makes us individual and beautiful. Although the physical character of the subjects is changed in each piece, the renderings ensure a commonality is portrayed, moving the style from purely figurative rendering to the capturing of the essence of womanhood and femininity.
